Residents in the former Vale Royal area will this week become the first to benefit from the borough’s new recycling and waste collection service.
Cheshire West and Chester Council’s ‘Recycle First’ service – providing households with their first weekly recycling collection – goes live in the area today (Monday 18 June).
The kerbside-sort system allows residents to recycle a vast range of materials ranging from glass, plastic and food cartons to small electrical items, mobile phones, textiles and cooking oil.
And a separate weekly kitchen waste collection will enable food scraps and leftovers – which currently make up one third of residual household waste – to be recycled rather than going to landfill.
This will remove a large part of the ‘smelly’ components from household waste bins, which will continue to be collected fortnightly.
Teams have been working throughout the area over the past eight weeks to make the changes required to residents’ collection containers. This has been supported by a major customer awareness programme.
Councillor Lynn Riley, Executive Member for Community and Environment, said: “The new service, designed around what our residents told us was important to them, will take recycling rates to 62 percent and beyond – potentially making Cheshire West and Chester one of the best performing areas in the country.
“By treating recyclable waste as a valuable resource, our partner May Gurney is maximising the quality of materials it collects to get the best possible price for them. This keeps the cost to the taxpayer down, providing savings of more than £50m over the 14-year life of the contract.”
The Council has worked with May Gurney to develop a customer-focused service that allows residents to recycle as much waste as possible. High levels of customer satisfaction are at the heart of the new service, with performance priorities based on issues highlighted by residents. These include returning containers after collection, reducing missed collections and clearing spills.
Households will continue to use their existing 55-litre recycling boxes – although what is placed into each will change – together with a 23-litre bin for kitchen waste. These will all be collected weekly.
Additional boxes are available free of charge by contacting the Council on 0300 123 7026 or email enquiries@cheshirewestanchester.gov.uk
Occasional additional recycling can be put out next to the boxes in a suitable, clearly labelled container.
A new 180-litre black wheeled bin has been provided for residual household waste and residents’ existing 240-litre green bin is now to be used for garden waste.
The brown bins that were removed as part of the transformation will be sold for recycling and the income generated will be invested back into the new service.
Collection days in some areas have changed and residents are reminded to check the calendar provided or use the collection day finder at www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk
The deadline to join the nappy recycling trial has now been extended to June 25. Households in the Vale Royal area can register by telephone on 0300 123 7026 or email enquiries@cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk
Phase two of Recycle First will be rolled out in the Ellesmere Port and Neston area in August, followed by phase three in the Chester area in November.
The new service will allow residents to recycle glass bottles and jars, mixed paper, cardboard, food and drinks cans, aluminium foil, mixed plastic food packaging, textiles, food and beverage cartons (tetrapaks), household and car batteries, spectacles, small electrical items, mobile phones, used cooking and engine oil, shoes, printer cartridges, garden waste and kitchen waste.
