Cheshire West and Chester Council was created in 2008, with elections returning a Conservative majority in 2008 and from 2009-2015, the Conservative run Council has saved £56M and reinvested £11m in Childrens Services and Adult Social Care without affecting front line services. Value for money says the Audit commission. Our Conservative Council sustained a vibrant economy, sustain business & increase jobs.
A Conservative Council made Cheshire West & Chester cleaner, greener and safer. We opposed inappropriate-development. We increased our recycling to 49%. We have reformed our enforcement teams and made our streets safer and cleaner. We increased investment in our roads and are a top performing Council in filling potholes. Our gritting teams have been highly praised by residents during the recent hard winters.
In May 2011, despite the difficult economic situation, the people of Cheshire West and Chester returned the Conservative Party with a majority to continue to run the Council.
A Conservative Council believes local services should meet the needs of local people. We consulted widely on capital investment for the future of the borough and set out a £115M programme to meet these objectives which include two Academies, a Northwich lifestyle centre and a theatre for Chester. We set up a Community Interest Company to manage our sports facilities and to raise investment in all our sports facilities.
Our Conservative Council gave better value for money. We continued to work hard to keep the level of Council Tax as low as we could whilst making sure that the money you paid was spent efficiently on the services you needed and in a way which supports our local economy. We increased investment in both Children and Adult services despite the reductions in Central government support. We encouraged more people who are eligible for benefits to take them. An additional £1m is now being paid to those who need it most, benefiting them and the local economy. We pursued the regeneration projects in our major towns stalled by the national downturn. We supported our market towns and rural communities. We have an active Council apprentice scheme to provide jobs for the young and also increased the supply of affordable housing in appropriate locations to create a vibrant and sustainable economy for the people of Cheshire West and Chester.
In May 2015, Labour gained control of Cheshire West and Chester council, with a 1 seat majority. Labour subsequently requested a reduction in the number of Councillors and a boundary review, which resulted in the number of Councillors dropping from 75 to 70 in 2019 on revised ward boundaries.
In May 2019, Labour lost overall control of the Council, which became 35 Labour, 29 Conservative, 3 Independents, 2 LibDems & 1 Green.
In May 2023, Labour regained control of the Council, which is now 38 Labour, 23 Conservatives, 3 Winsford Independents, 2 Greens, 2 Independent Group & 1 unaligned Independent.
Since Labour took power in 2015, the Council Tax has increased by over 40%, including a 4.99% maximum increase in 2023, which only the Conservatives opposed.
